IMPORTANT NEWS FOR WRITERS & THOSE INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING IDEAS FOR TV!

Some very important dates for your diary:

 Writers

First off, the BBC Writers Room have opened a window of opportunity for anyone to submit unsolicited scripts. It’s called The Writers Room.

They’ve changed from a rolling submissions system to one with specific windows when they will accept writers’ work so you need to get your script in before that window closes. It is notoriously hard to get unsolicited scripts seen by TV professionals with the power to commission!

The Script Room New Year 2013 window will be open for submissions from February 14th 2013 until 5pm on March 28th 2013.

All details here: The Writers Room

Development & Creativity

Secondly, The Royal Television Society have a great workshop lined up on the evening of February 20th with speakers Stephen Lambert, chair of All3 Media and Tim Cunningham, executive Producer at Princess Productions – these are both key players in the broadcast business.  And it’s FREE.

Stephen Lambert shares the stories behind the development of some of the major series on UK TV today including Wife Swap, Faking it and Undercover Boss, and Tim Cunningham, EP at Princess Productions, will run a hands-on experience of techniques in brainstorming.

The session will also cover researching the current market, knowing what commissioners want,  and how to pull together the perfect pitch. It is being held at ITV studios on the Southbank in London.

What techniques do the indies use to generate new programme ideas? Where can you find information about which commissioner wants what? How do you write up a programme proposal? Do the broadcasters only want big formats rather than one-offs? Tim and Stephen will guide you through the maze that is the world of creativity.

And finally,

FREE DRINK!!!

A good friend, Natalie, is a News Producer and journalist currently working at ITV. Her brother heads up a bright new band who are playing at Barfly in Camden next Tuesday 19th February. Naturally she’s invited loads of her telly friends some of whom will no doubt turn up.  So maybe an opportunity to use your networking and social skills while enjoying a good night out!  Apart from anything the band, Zaphonic, are great (listen to them here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8su7ecp_EY) and tickets bought in advance are cheaper than on the door.

Natalie Lisbona

Full details and online booking for tickets here: Zaphonic at Barfly
AND THERE’S MORE! The first ten people to find Natalie Lisbona at the venue on the evening of the 19th February, having bought a ticket, will get a FREE DRINK as long as they bring along a print off of the front page of this website ‘So You Want To Work in Television’.
That is one free drink per person clutching a print off from this web site up to ten maximum.
Natalie Lisbona looks like this, and while we’re talking about her you might want to read this article she wrote some time ago So You Want To Work on the Newsdesk.
And she’s totally mad offering this incentive to come see her excellent brother and his excellent band so please be gentle – if she is overwhelmed and you miss out on the free drink just enjoy the evening and make the most of meeting one of the best news producers and journalist I’ve had the pleasure to work with!
Book in those dates and indulge all your creative juices!  Enjoy.

  1. Hi Shu

I have a number of TV show ideas. I have been documenting these ideas using my own format of the specific of the concepts. Could you recommend a specific format for presentation of these concepts to producers, production companies etc?

    • Hi Tessa

We do not run these seminars, we are simply passing on the information for anyone interested. If you check the link provided it will explain who is running the event and how to get in touch with them.

      Very best, Shu
